East London Science School is delighted to announce that we will be opening a Sixth Form in September 2018. The ethos of ELSS is that every pupil, regardless of background, has the right to a challenging, academic education. Since our creation in 2013 we have been creating a broad curriculum with knowledge at its centre.
East London Science School Sixth form will be one of the only in East London to offer A Level Latin. The course will enable students to read a wide variety of Classical literature, with authors studied in Latin including but not limited to Virgil, Cicero, Livy, Ovid and Apuleius. Our curriculum will also expose students to a range of literature in translation, both Latin and Greek. They will get the chance to study:
- epic poetry (Homer, Ennius, Ovid, Lucan)
- Greek tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides)
- Greek and Latin oratory (Demosthenes, Lysias, Cicero, Caesar)
- Greek and Roman history (Herodotus, Thucydides, Tacitus, Livy)
- a selection of later medieval Latin authors (Augustine, Petrarch, Dante, Copernicus)
Five hours of lesson time per week will ensure that students get the amount of teaching required for them to succeed at this level of study and beyond. To complement classroom learning, students will go on regularly trips to museums and Universities to see source material and attend lectures and workshops on Classical topics. There will also be a trip abroad to visit the ancient sites of Greece in July 2019.
